The Time I Exploded When I Was Seven

I was seven the summer of 1977, when my dad told me Elvis Presley had died. For a young kid, I was actually pretty interested in music and felt bad about him dying.

I asked how Elvis died and my dad told me he exploded because he ate too much.

I believed him. What did I know, I was seven?

A few days later my dad made us egg salad and olive sandwiches, my favorite. I ate my entire sandwich and asked for another one. He made it for me.

I ate about half of it when suddenly I started to not feel so good. I ran to the bathroom and threw it all up.

My dad came in and said I ate way too much. Couldn't he have told me that bit of information before he made me the second sandwich?

I started crying hysterically and wouldn't stop. He asked why and I told him I was exploding like Elvis and about to die.

He laughed. I cried and threw up some more.

I didn't eat egg and olive again until I was 28 and my husband made me try it. Now I love it. But only one sandwich at a time.

With a name like yours, of course the death of Elvis hit hard.

I like the last line of your post. Thanks for the laugh this morning!

LOL. Poor Lisa. Is that turning into your son's favorite sandwich as well? You guys eat a lot of it.

I had a similar thing with Chili. I ate a lot one night when I was probably 7 or 8. I got so sick and have only recently started eating chili (the last 2 years or so).

I still remember the day Elvis died, too! I was eight at the time. But I didn't worry about exploding myself :) Too funny!

LOL! I shouldn't laugh but I can't help it. Oh, the trauma parents put their kids through. Mine are doomed.
ROFL! What a great story! :-)

Tess, good idea! Why do I never think to add my own stories?

Thanks guys:)
Gotta love the way kids think. Many years ago, my little sister had what we called "the creeping crud" - a nasty little bug that was going around and getting everybody. My sister sneezed and....well, it wasn't pretty. Anyway, she got hysterical and started screaming that her nose had exploded.

Ah...the memories of childhood :oP

When I was ten I was eating hot dogs at a picnic. Before then I had always eaten just two, but that day I felt especially hungry, so I ate a third. When we got home I started feeling ill and ended up throwing up numerous times that night.

Since that day...I have never consumed more than two hot dogs, no matter how hungry I am.

DL, I'll have to rememeber that!

We have to be careful of what we say to kids, don't we? Lots of lasting "bad" impressions.

Glad you recovered from the picture of an exploding Elvis .

What we say can come back to haunt us. Be careful what we tell kids. They take it literally. I think one of my little guys is afraid of eating too much cheese pizza, again. Similar explosion.

Your stories crack me up! Thanks!
Great story! My second brother was born on August 16, 1977. I was listening to the radio and heard about Elvis, then my step-dad came home and told me about my brother. Sorry about the sandwiches...

LOL. I needed this laugh!! :) When I was little I had very long hair that took forever to wash and comb out. I somehow ended up putting my head in one of those huge spiderwebs and my aunt wanted to wash my hair to get it out.

I didn't want to be bothered and was fussing about taking the time to wash my hair...so my aunt told me if I didn't wash my hair the spider was going to come looking for his home in my hair and he was going to bring his spider family and they would all live in my hair!

You never saw a kid run so fast to get their hair washed and to this day I cannot walk through a spiderweb without completely wigging out!

Great story! I was seven, too. I remember my mom sobbing when he died.

And now I totally know what I'm going to have for lunch...
